It is the autumn term at Kingscote. Ginty Marlow is missing the company of Patrick Merrick and her injured friend Monica. Meanwhile, Nicola and Lawrie are planning their form's contribution to the Christmas carol service. Without Monica, Ginty is finding it hard to enjoy the term, but when she breaks rules to telephone Patrick she does not realise what the consequences will be for Patrick, Nicola and herself.
